FAQ

This post is to explain some basic concepts and some jargon which is related to my blog.

First I believe everyone knows what is basketball. But some people may don’t know NBA.

NBA is a The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a men’s professional basketball league in North America. It composes 30 teams(29 in America and 1 in Canada).  It is widely be regarded as the premier men’s professional basketball league in the world.(Resource from WIKIPEDIA)

Then there are many different stages for NBA:

Preseason is the stage for players to prepare to new season。 Although they need to play with the other teams in NBA,but the team record are not used in regular season

Regular season is the main stage in NBA. Each team plays 82 games, 41 each home and away. A team faces opponents in its own division four times a year (16 games). Each team plays six of the teams from the other two divisions in its conference four times (24 games), and the remaining four teams three times (12 games). Finally, each team plays all the teams in the other conference twice apiece (30 games). During the regular season, there are Christmas games on Christmas Day and the  NBA All-Star Game for NBA stars to give a show for audience.

Playoffs is the next round for some best games in NBA. The NBA Playoffs begin in late April, with the top eight teams in each conference, regardless of divisional alignment, competing for the Championship. Seeds are awarded in strict order of regular-season record (with a tiebreaker system used as needed). Having a higher seed offers several advantages. Since the first seed begins the playoffs playing against the eighth seed, the second seed plays the seventh seed, the third seed plays the sixth seed, and the fourth seed plays the fifth seed, having a higher seed means a team faces a weaker team in the first round. The team in each series with the better record has home court advantage, including the First Round. Before the league changed its playoff determination format for the 2006–07 season, this meant that, for example, if the team that received the 6 seed had a better record than the team with the 3 seed (by virtue of a divisional championship), the 6 seed would have home court advantage, even though the other team had a higher seed. Therefore, the team with the best regular season record in the league is guaranteed home court advantage in every series it plays.

There are 5 positions in NBA: are the point guard (PG), the shooting guard (SG), the small forward (SF), the power forward (PF), and the center (C)(Resource from WIKIPEDIA) .

The point guard (PG), also known as the one, is typically the team’s best ball handler and passer

The shooting guard (SG) is also known as the two or the off guard.most shooting guards are good shooters from three-point range.

The small forward (SF), also known as the three, is considered to be the most versatile of the main five basketball positions. Versatility is key for small forwards because of the nature of their role, which resembles that of a shooting guard more often than that of a power forward.

The power forward (PF), also known as the four, often plays a role similar to that of the center, down in the “post” or “low blocks”. The power forward is often the team’s most versatile scorer, being able to score close to the basket while also being able to shoot mid-range jump shots from 12 to 18 feet from the basket.

The center (C), also known as the five or the pivot, usually plays near the baseline, close to the basket (the “low post”). They are usually the tallest players on the floor. The center usually scores “down low, in the paint” (near the basket, in the key), but some can be good perimeter shooters. They are typically skilled at gathering rebounds, contesting shots and setting screens on plays.

Then, in my posts, there are also some basketball jargon (Resource from WIKIPEDIA) like :

Air ball- An unblocked shot that fails to hit the rim or backboard.

Assist– A pass to a teammate who scores a basket immediately or after one dribble.

Foul– Violations of the rules other than floor violations, generally attempts to gain advantage by physical contact; penalized by a change in possession or free-throw opportunities; see personal foul, technical foul, flagrant foulunsportsmanlike foul, and disqualifying foul.

Jump shot-An overhead shot taken while jumping, sometimes abbreviated

Lay-in– A close-range shot using one hand to tip the ball over the rim

Pick and roll-an offensive play in which a player sets a screen (pick) for a teammate handling the ball and then slips behind the defender (rolls) to accept a pass.

In this section, I only mention a few jargons about NBA, if you are confused about the jargon I use in my article, you can comment or email me and I will give you answer.
